Where is Hillcrest Located?

Hillcrest is the "center stage" of San Diego’s Uptown district. As the vibrant urban link between the historic charm of Mission Hills and the leafy elegance of Bankers Hill, it serves as the ultimate gateway to Balboa Park and the Downtown skyline.

How Far is Hillcrest from...?

Because Hillcrest is the city’s primary transit and cultural hub, you're convenient to all of the below and more:

  • A 5-minute Uber to the Gaslamp Quarter or Little Italy.
  • A 10-minute bike ride to the San Diego Zoo.
  • A short stroll to the world-class museums of Balboa Park
  • Central Proximity: Hillcrest is located just 2 miles from Downtown San Diego, making it a quick 5-minute drive or an 11-minute bus ride to the city's core.

Who Lives Here?

Hillcrest is one of San Diego's most eclectic "melting pots".

  • Young Professionals: With its high "walk score" and proximity to downtown and major hospitals (like UCSD and Scripps), Hillcrest is a magnet for career-driven individuals who want a 15-minute life—where the gym, the office, and the happy hour spot are all within a mile radius.
  • The LGBTQ+ Community: As the historic and cultural heart of San Diego’s queer community, Hillcrest is home to people who value advocacy, expression, and a neighborhood that celebrates being exactly who you are.
  • Foodies & Creatives: If you prefer a local roastery over a chain coffee shop or a handmade ramen bowl over fast food, you’ll be in good company.
  • Active Urbanites: You’ll see plenty of neighbors out walking their dogs toward Balboa Park, heading to a Saturday morning yoga session, or exploring a local canyon trail.
  • Empty Nesters & Long-time Locals: Many residents have been here for decades, living in the neighborhood’s historic craftsman homes, providing a sense of stability and "old San Diego" charm to the bustling area. Hillcrest is best for you if: You want a neighborhood with a "soul," you prefer walking to driving, and you thrive in a diverse, high-energy environment where there is always something happening.

What's the "Vibe" Like?

This eclectic neighbohood offers everything from beautiful craftsman bungalows and stucco Spanish revival homes to sleek and modern new apartment complexes. Commercial and restaurant spaces are just as lively.

  • Iconic Landmarks: The skyline is punctuated by the historic Hillcrest Neon Sign and the 65-foot Pride Flag, marking the neighborhood’s identity as a cultural and historic capital of San Diego.
  • Historic & Modern Architecture: A mix of historic Craftsman bungalows and Spanish Revival homes alongside sleek, modern buildings like Denizen. Check out Cossitt Cottage, a 1910 home designed by Irving J. Gill (California’s first modernist architect).
  • Superb Shops & Restaurants: The streets are a foodie’s paradise, with 200 diverse restaurants ranging from late-night street food to high-end dining. Enjoy browsing indie boutiques, vintage shops, and local bookstores.
  • Urban Canyons & Nature Trails: One of Hillcrest's best-kept secrets is its proximity to nature. The neighborhood is bordered by lush urban canyons, like Vermont Canyon and Richmond Canyon, which offer quiet hiking paths.
  • The Green "Uptown" Feel: Unlike many urban centers, Hillcrest is remarkably green. You’ll find wide, tree-lined residential streets and hidden pedestrian bridges—like the Quince Street or Upas Street footbridges—that connect the neighborhood to the sprawling 1,200 acres of Balboa Park.
